Why Properly accredited therapists are a must!

Ensuring your mobile Massage Therapist in California is properly certified by the
California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) or the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) is critical for safety, as it ensures they have passed rigorous background checks (including Live Scan) and have completed at least 600 hours of accredited training. As of January 1, 2026, CAMTC-certified therapists are formally recognized as Health Care Providers in California, distinguishing them from uncertified, non-clinical providers.
Why You Must Verify Certification
  • Safety and Background Checks: Certified therapists undergo Live Scan fingerprinting, which checks for criminal history—including, in some cases, expunged records—to prevent convicted criminals or predators from entering your home.
  • Verified Training: CAMTC certification confirms a minimum of 600 hours of training from an approved school, covering essential anatomy, pathology, and contra-indications.
  • Liability and Insurance: Unlicensed or uncertified therapists often do not qualify for professional liability insurance, leaving you with little recourse if you are injured.
  • Preventing Illicit Activity: CAMTC  and NCBTMB helps combat the use of the massage profession as a front for sex trafficking.
  • Legal Status: CAMTC certification allows therapists to legally work across all of California, removing the need for patchwork, city-specific permits.
How to Verify a Mobile Massage Therapist in California
To ensure the person entering your home is properly accredited, take these steps before booking:
  1. Request Information: Ask for the therapist’s full name and their CAMTC or NCBTMB Certificate number.
  2. Verify Online: Go to the CAMTC "Verify Certification" website to confirm their certification is active. Or, if Nationally Certified go to https://my.ncbtmb.org/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?site=NCBTMB&webcode=NCBTMBFindBoardCertThComplaint&complaint=0&type=verify

  1. Check Credentials: Look for the "CMT" (Certified Massage Therapist) designation.
  2. Confirm Identity: When they arrive, they are required by California law to have their CAMTC ID card in their possession and display their original certificate.
Warning: If a therapist cannot provide a valid CAMTC number or refuses to show their ID, they are not regulated by the state and may not have the necessary training or background checks.

Mobile Massage is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself to manage stress and maintain good physical health. But be smart, protect yourself from those who are unqualified and/or unscrupulous.
